Description

Join Wendy’s exciting art world full of colour and pop art in her beautiful Edinburgh studio. Wendy’s artistic development started growing up in the 80’s surrounded by pop culture, advertising and the growing mass media.

Wendy’s first taste of fashion began with paper dolls back in the 70’s where as a young child she dressed up the pop out figures from magazines which is very similar to her craft today which sees her cutting out pieces from fashion magazines to create her characters, often over accessorised thus adding a touch of humour as well as putting the spotlight on the consumerist culture of today. Her artwork has been now widely celebrated for its fun, innovative and highly positive vibe.

Comments from collectors from ‘modern day Lowry’ to ‘bonkers but brilliant’ see Helliwell often depicting the typical British culture of queuing, a perfect platform to showcase her love of fashion, style and identity. As pieces are added, her integration of concept, colour and form express her aspirations of getting closer to the playful spirit of creativity where she endeavours to compose a narrative within the world of fashion.

She aims to evoke nostalgia through brand identity and styling where the viewer may identity with a specific character or two reminding them of someone they know or even themselves.

‘I think the desire to express ourselves through dressing up is an extension of why we buy magazines in the first place…to escape, dream and seek inspiration.’

If you would like to create your very own pop art using some unique techniques while expanding your knowledge then this is just the experience for you.

Wendy works in a studio which has been specifically built on the gable end of her home. It is bright, airy and has light flooding in from several windows and sky lights. It is full of completed and in progress works of art as well as an endless array of mixed media materials colour co-ordinated in large containers. From nail polish to water colours the choice of materials is endless.

1. Mini Quirky Queue:

A selection of bodies to dress and style. You may wish to bring a family photo, picture of a band or similar. This will act as inspiration in the art process if you choose to create a particular likeness within the queue of characters. Truly unique!
Your creation will be on a panoramic rectangular stretched canvas with pre splashed nail polish for the heads, you will begin by choosing from a wide range of colour boards ready for you to create your own piece of artwork. The work will then be further worked on with nail polish, acrylics and ink. Final embellishments will be made to pull the work together before finishing with a sealing process for longevity.
