Photographic Dérive with Jon Spencer

Description

The Dérive (from the French word for drifting) is a way of exploring the urban environment; unplanned, and without the usual structure or motives (work, consumerism, leisure etc). We will use this technique as a way of exploring the seaside town of Margate, and as a way of image making. The nature of the image making can be tailored to each participant, with examples including:

− architecture
− social (hi)stories
− pattern & shape finding

At the end the day you’ll have a selection of images, with the potential to be the start of a small photo book. If desired you could spend some time at the end of the day thinking about possible formats & production methods.

Location: Starting at Jon’s studio in the Cliftonville area of Margate, our location would be determined as we went, but could include Margate, it’s satellite areas of Cliftonville, Palm Bay, Westbrook etc, sea front esplanades, cliff top paths, industrial estates and out of town retail parks.
