Painting Coastal Expressions with Kim O’Neil

£275.00

Description

Join Kim in a rural or beach location to plein air paint with a difference. Tune into nature, connect with your environment, allow yourself to get covered in paint during the process and produce an abstract painting in response. This will be followed by lunch and finessing the paintings in her studio. You’ll leave the experience with a large abstract painting inspired by nature.

Kim has over 17 years of art teaching and tutoring experience. Her notable tutors wile studying in Central St Martins included Paul Eachus, Bill Henderson and Nooshin Farnid. She has exhibited in group shows, including exhibiting alongside Maggie Hamblin, Paula Rego and Annie Kevans. Her current paintings feature idiosyncratic paint techniques in the form of sophisticated, multi layered abstracts. They are the response to certain environments and usually made on location, in the dirt, sand and sea. Not the end result of study, but part of an experience; rejoicing in the dirt, using organic resources to make the marks like scratching the paint on with sticks and thwacking paint on the canvas with blades of long grass, immersing a partly dried painting in the billowing waves of the beach surf and allowing the marks in the paint to made by the rain.

The experience will start with an introduction to the materials and techniques that will be used, as well as a briefing on the environment and the approach to creating an abstract painting in response to it

Beach walk: Next, the artist and participant could take a walk along the beach, observing and taking note of the colours, textures, and patterns in the environment. This could also serve as an opportunity for the artist to offer guidance on how to find inspiration and develop a visual language for the painting.

Demonstration: Once the participant has had a chance to absorb the environment, they will witness a demonstration by the artist. The artist could offer feedback and suggestions, but ultimately, the participant would have creative control over the direction of the painting.

Painting: With a plan in place, the participant could begin painting, using acrylic or oil paints on a canvas. The artist could offer technical guidance on colour mixing, brushwork, and other aspects of painting, but the focus would be on allowing the participant to express their unique response to the environment in an abstract way. The participant and the artist would now take the paintings back to the artist’s studio to refine them and enjoy a stop of lunch.

Reflection and critique: Once the painting is complete, the artist and participant could take some time to reflect on the experience and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the painting.

Overall, a one-to-one painting workshop on the beach would offer a truly unique and enriching experience for anyone interested in exploring their creativity and connection to nature.
